I have been dreaming about having an exhibition themed "On My Way – Traces of Horses
and Folks" for a long time. Finally my dream comes true in 2014, the Chinese Lunar New
Year of the Horse. All my encounters with horses during my travelling amongst various
mountains and rivers all these years have been recorded in the photos.
Since the first time I took a horse picture during a circus show at the end of 2005, which
could be called a photographic work, I began taking horses pictures passionately and
persistently. Perhaps such passion is just like that for my horses painting.
In the summer of 2007, I happened to meet with five Mongolian horses on the seaside in
Guangdong. They were taking a rest with eyes closed, in a serene pose, totally indifferent
to the rolling waves. One year later, I revisited the place but to find the horses had gone. An
eatery owner at the seaside told me that during a typhoon one of the horses was swept away
and drowned in the sea. After the typhoon, the herdsman left with the rest of the horses
sadly.
In the spring of 2008, I went to the west of Sichuan Province. In a dense forest in the deep
mountains, a white horse appeared, just like the one in Japanese artist Kaii Higashiyma’s
painting "The White Horse".
In the autumn of 2009, while traveling along the Ancient Tea Route in the Nu River Grand
Canyon in Bingzhongluo, the border area of Yunnan Province, I captured with my camera
five horses running on the cliff above the surging river.
In the following days, I went further to the vast horse ranches in Hulunbuie Grasslands,
ranging from A'er Mountain, Hailaer, to the Shiwei Valley that reaches the boundary of
Russia.
I visited Tibet twice and took particular trips to the Lulang Ranch in Linzhi, where five
horses running in the rain and mist of the snow–covered plateau were captured on camera.
