Foreword

The Essay about Dawn and Space

(Director of Branch, Gwangju Museum of Art. Ph.D)
There have been media developments during the 21st century, so the boundary between culture and economy of each country and region has collapsed already. There is the only political wall. We are exposed to such a historical issue, and we are given the significant task of collaboration for us to pursue peaceful coexistence between mutual regions and countries. Therefore the world is getting blocklized and compromising conflicts to integrate the culture and economy. China and Korea are located in the area of East Asia geopolitically, and both of two countries have had heartbroken memories of wars for long history ecologically. In addition, China has large parts indeed within the history of Korean Peninsula, from now on, bilateral relations are getting amicable.Next year will be the 20th anniversary of the founding diplomatic relations between Korea and China, especially Guangzhou in China has continued to have friendship as a sister city with Gwangju in Korea, however it is not so long that both of the cities established friendly relation. The two cities had the first event of the culture exchange in 2005. At this point of time, this exhibition will be meaningful opportunity to us as the art exhibition organized by civilian. In the future, we hope that culture exchanges will be expanded actively.
We've invited two artists from Gwangju, Kim Young-sam, who shows the traditional oriental paintings to demand speculation and Lee Mea-lee, who sublimated Minimal inspiration into the installation or paintings by oriental spiritual space. Kim Young-sam is an artist who creates oriental ink paintings through the traditional East Asian method and gives a lesson to modern life. Oriental ink paintings were originated from China and spread out to Korea. This exhibition will show the Dawn series. The early Dawn is the time when demands new start and promise and the nature which requires us to welcome its message with innocent mind. He hopes that human is in harmony with the nature and obey the rule of the greate nature. He demonstrates Philosophy of nature friendly by Lao-tzu in his works. For reasons of industrialization, the modern people have been destroying the environment rapidly. He tries to give a lesson and warning message for us to realize it. In addition, bamboo that exists in the middle of the dawn as one of the Four Gracious Plants contributes to remind ancestral life style and spirit of us. Lee Mea-lee is the artist who pulls Minimal inspiration into the esthetic discourse about space, and the feminist who reveals symbol of feminity through the high-heel. She grafted western style of art into the oriental spiritual world in the minimal square in this manner.
This exhibition shows the high-heel which was reinterpreted into the two-dimensional image in the minimal cube through photographic method, and the limitless space and the esthetics of space which were formalized by existence and nonexistence in cubic space. Her creative world stresses the beauty of space existing in the white cube. White means peace, purity and symbol of Korean racial color sense, therefore traditionally, Korean have been called "Back-ey-min-jok (white-clad race)". The white space which was represented in her works will be a place to rest for the modern people who regard the speed of great importance. Additionally, the empty space without anything will be filled with a lot of meaning, space without any living will become a conceive place for the birth, finally the space leads us to the oriental spiritual world.
