From Paradise Lost to Nansha”---Xu PeiWu Photographic Exhibition of City Images in 10 Years(Beijing Guangzhou Shanghai Touring Exhibition)----Guangzhou

No.5 Nong Lin Xia Road, Guangzhou
Exhibition Duration:Nov.24-Dec.19, 2007

“From paradise lost to Nansha” – the photographic exhibition of city images in 10 years by Xu Pei Wu will be held in Fei Gallery on Nov. 24th, 2007, the curator is the founder of Fei Gallery Ms. Michelle Yap.
This touring exhibition was held at Beijing YQK De Shan Art Space Gallery in July this year, Guangzhou will be its second stop, and it will be held in Shanghai as its third stop in 2008.
In mid 90’s of the last century, Xu Pei Wu took photos of Guangzhou - the city he was living in --- where the huge change took place: as the city renewal was carried out, the traditional arcaded commercial street block and the Xiguan houses disappeared; The new city district - Pearl River New Town has gradually become the city commercial center, while in the past, it was the biggest “city village” in Guangzhou. The opera house, the museum, the park and the commercial centre have been built on the same land where the vegetable plots, the fishing village, the pigpens and the wasteyard were located at; Nan Sha, the seaport of Guangzhou and the center point of the Pearl River Delta, has risen up as a new logistics and industrial area, whereas the photos that Xu Pei Wu took in Nan Sha show us a different world of its past: wilderness, banana trees, vegetable plot, water pool and even the traces the bird group left behind….
Address: The 2nd & 12th floor, Estate Plaza, Nong Lin Xia Road, Guangzhou, China (Metro Exit C of Dong Shan Kou Station )
Duration: Nov. 24th, 2007 – Dec. 19th, 2007

Images of a Decade, Memory of the City
Ten Years is in no way a short time. Few people managed to really achieve something in ten years. However, Xu Peiwu did it: Since the municipal government decided to move the central business district (CBD) to Lie De Village and named it “Pearl River New Town”, for 10 years, he has persistently kept a record of such a huge change that took place there, and later in Nan Sha. He says that he won’t stop doing this for the rest of his life, now it’s more convenient since there is subway in the city, and it’s a pleasant thing to carry a foldable bicycle and go wherever he likes. Persistence is an especially valuable quality in a time full of temptations and changes.
Ten years is indeed short compared to the 2000 years history of the city. We are lucky to see the emergence of a new town in 10 years’ time—the same undertaking would have taken our ancestors several generations to make. On the other hand, it is a pity to chuck away too many relics along with other old things and as a result, Guangzhou becomes a most stylishness and characterless city as it is now.
Ten years is actually neither long nor short, during which Xu Peiwu’s artistic transformation changes from vanity to simplicity. It is an ultimate challenge for both fashion designers and artists to use neutral tints to express something colorful and luxuriant, it is also no exception for photographers. The neutral tints are in low contrast and the effect would be hard to control if the films are developed and printed by hand. But Xu does it all by himself. Each piece of photo shot by him depicts the grandness and restlessness of such great times in a most placid way. These neutral tints represent the local Cantonese’ attitude toward life: no need for argument, and stay calm when facing ups and downs in life.
Although the high profile debut in Beijing has received a great deal of attention among the local art critics and collectors, the second stop of this touring exhibition in Guangzhou is of the most importance: since these photos are telling the stories of the city in a typical Cantonese way, they have got to trigger a dialogue between the photographer and the local audience. While how will the people respond to it? Will they stay cool as they treat the fashion parties, or receive it with great passion as they do to the New Year Concert even though it is high-browed and hard to understand?
I guess it may be just like these photos in neutral tints, rich affection can be perceived behind their placid looks.
